When Should a Pool Builder Plan for an Automatic Cover?

Automatic pool covers are often treated as an add-on. In reality, they affect structural layout, deck detailing, vault dimensions, drainage, and electrical planning. If the cover is not considered early, it becomes a retrofit problem.

The right time to plan for an automatic pool cover is during structural design. Vault sizing must be determined before concrete is placed. Track selection influences coping and deck layout. Drainage must be addressed before finishes go in. Electrical conduit routing should be planned before decking is poured.

Waiting until the end of the project creates avoidable complications. Track alignment may not match final dimensions. Vault space may be insufficient. Drainage access may be limited. These issues are preventable with early coordination.

For rectangular pools, planning is straightforward but still requires measurement accuracy. For freeform designs, vanishing edges, raised bond beams, or renovation projects, structural integration becomes more technical. The cover must be designed around the pool as it is built, not how it appeared in the original drawings.

Builders who coordinate cover selection during the design phase reduce jobsite delays, eliminate rework, and avoid post-installation adjustments.

Automatic covers are mechanical systems integrated into a structural environment. Treating them as part of the build — not an afterthought — leads to cleaner installations and better long-term performance.

If you are planning a new build or renovation that includes an automatic cover, early coordination makes the difference.
